Initially, when Amtrak hired its own train and engine crews, they hired off existing railroads. I am sure people of these type will have first shot at them, but a lot of people don't want to relocate or relinquish substantial seniority.

As with anything, you have to get your foot in the door. Follow the path to an employment application and you're on your way. This is of course contingent on whether you have any health problems or problems with drugs / alcohol. Any of the three will get you shot down immediately.

By the way, doughboy, trains don't run over anybody. People put themselves in the way and get themselves run over.
