Any long distance commuters out there (live >100 miles from your work)?

How far do you commute?

What do you do to pass the time?

I know of at least 10 regular customers who travel from the station I work at and travel in excess of 100miles daily. They always have a good book with them, laptop, flask of drink and sandwhiches and a music player. They normally catch the first trains out and return close to the mid evening.
Talking to them they like the journey as they can work on the trains being that early as far as London (38 miles) then hop on the tube and then when they board there next services, they are going against the flow so again get seats.
the longest journey one of them makes is approx 260miles a day, costs them £5000 in a season ticket and takes 3hours each way on average. And yes he does have a family!
I think he is mad, but as he says the wages are very good and he does not pay for his season ticket.

I'm semi-retired, but do a MONTHLY commute to my brother's ranch which is 140 miles away. I go up each month for a weekend to help him with various chores and projects... and of course to sit around and talk over a few beers in the evening.

Rather than make the 3-4 hour drive... I take CalTrain to San Jose, then the ACE (Altamont Commuter Express) to Stockton. The Stockton Station is only 2 miles from his work, and the train arrives 15 minutes after he gets off. I ride with him the 50 miles to his ranch. Simple, cheap, and relaxing.

To pass the time, I read a book, work on my laptop, or nap.

If circumstances have been distinctive, this style of pass could make sense for a pair years. optimistically you are going to be able to desire to then pass up and have a extra everyday return and forth. yet those at the instant are not everyday circumstances. Forgetting with reference to the extra desirable return and forth time, what with reference to the actuality that your modern activity is extra solid. whether it relatively is, the will arises to attend. Getting back on your specific question, I even have commuted from Mt. Laurel NJ to NYC interior the previous. There are numerous hundred commuters who get on the bus, return and forth a million hour and 40 5 minutes on the turnpike to get to the Port Authority construction at forty second highway. Then it could take yet another 0.5 hour to get on your workplace. Then upload the quarter-hour each and each thank you to the bus station in NJ and you have in simple terms approximately 3 hours. The upside is that in case you are able to sleep sitting up and discover the money for the 5 hundred greenback fare consistent with month, manhattan jobs pay 30% extra. good occupation pass, undesirable high quality of life pass. Kiss the kin see you later. yet i be responsive to 3 who've completed this for years.

I had a friend that travelled from Taunton to Bournemouth every day for nightshift - she used to take a flask of coffee and stop half way to sleep. Seemed nuts to me!
