Bob (above) has the right idea using PATH but - it will take 2 trains not one.

Take the Journal Square (JSQ) at 33rd St to Journal Square and then transfer across the platform to a Newark (NWK) train.

The whole trip should take 35 minutes (+/-).

Note: if you are doing this late at night or on a weekend add about 5 minutes to the travel time as Journal Square trains operate to Hoboken first and then continue on.

Edit: One more thing - the fare is $1.50 each way.

PATH has a stop on 33rd St. a few blocks from NY Penn Station. Take PATH all the way to Newark Penn Station - the fare is like $3 compared to the higher cost for NJ Transit and Amtrak.

take any NJ Transit Northeast Corridor train, or any NJ Transit train Eastbound (sometimes and extra train added to the schedule) with a final stop of NY-Penn. the trains come about every 10 minutes. I know this because I make the commute daily. I hope this has been helpful. Good luck with your travels.
