My mechanic wants $750 to add compression to me engine, and I think he's charging too much. Where can I get my own and do it myself?

Im driving my 84 toyota camry and there is consistent thumping under the drivers side floor. You can feel it under your feet. Also when you let go of the wheel it wobbles back and forth.
I grabbed the front drivers side wheel and it moved just a lttle and I heard a small clunk.

Whats wrong with this car as its stressing me out as I cant fix it right away. Is it still safe? Its not going to send me off the freeway right?
