I received a "proposed change" to my 2005 taxes. It included additional tax, payment decrease and interest charges. It contained an amount due if paid by 7/25/2007.
I paid that amount and the check cleared on 7/20/2007

I received another notice saying I now owe a "penalty for late payment since prior notice" of my original taxes 15months @ .5%.
why wouldn't this have been included on my original notice?
Do I owe this, especially since I paid the full amount they originally said I owed by the date they said?

so dam* frusturated

So if the guy that caught that 1million dollar baseball, and decides to keep it, and then dies, would the irs tax his estate the 35% of the 1million? What if he lost the ball? What if it wasnt worth anything anymore, only the 1 dollar walmart price? What if he sells it to his freind in another country who isnt a us citizen for 1 dollar? Will they tax him 350k for that 1 dollar he made?

Ok, I have an LLC with a dba on a retail store (California). I'm looking into completing the sale in the next 2months. I read somewhere that a business can be sold as the LLC as a whole, or be sold as assets being broken down. Is that true and if so, is the advantage in selling the entire LLC really at a 15% tax vs 33% tax braket?

Are there any tips in lower my capital gains tax on ($700k selling price). Meaning can I invest that gain into paying off my $400k mortgage and only have to pay taxes on the $300k or even buying a second home with $500k down and pay taxes on $200k?

My boyfriend recieved a packet in the mail from the irs saying he owes 1200.00 for failure to file in 2001. 2 problems arise from this. One he was in the military for most of the tax year mentioned and two he never recieved a W-2 for the 2001 tax year. He served over 5 years in the navy, was in a tax free zone for at least a month. He has filed taxes for every year but this one. Had he been able to file for 2001 ( gotten his W-2 ) he would have gotten a refund. Can anyone give us suggestions on how to handle this? Thank you for helping

I started a new job May 1st where I work from my home office. I'm a Sales Director and my corp office is in Phoenix. My company already pays for my landline phone and high speed internet service. I am being told that I can write off part of my mortgage as well as my utility bills. Other than telling me to talk to an accountant I am looking for some quick answers. Thanks!

My situation is the following: i owe about 16,000 to the IRS from 2005, and about 1800 to the state franchise board due to a family emergency we had in 2005, because of my parents health i need to leave to my country of origin to take over my family's small business. I might be gone for 1 or 2 years, maybe even longer , i cannot pay this money at the time, so i am thinking of going into bankruptcy , what will happen , do i still need to pay them after ?
