In February of this year I was named a trustee for a revocable trust established by my deceased grandfather for the benefit of my 57 year-old aunt who is not good at managing her money. The original trustees elected to effectively abdicate their positions after only nine months due to the money-management work involved. My question is twofold: 1) please confirm that I am responsible for filing tax returns for the trust and 2) please confirm that I am NOT responsible for filing tax returns for the period prior to becoming trustee (I would like to pass this back to the original trustees if possible). A tax returns for 2006 has not been filed yet.

My friend has been on disability since 2001 and has not filed income tax. He only gets about $14,000 a year. Now the IRS and state are taking over $3000 from him. Is this right?

My future son-in-law is trying to refinance his home mortgage. The man handling the refinance suggested that he might get a lower interest rate if he included my daughter's income and assets. They are unmarried, living together in Minnesota and expecting their first child in December. There are two parts to this question: Part One - Is this true about the possible lower interest rate and a good idea? and Part Two - Would they have to file taxes together from that point on? I would appreciate any advice and comments.

This is the first home my husband and I have owned, it's a condominium that was purchased 10 months ago. We just experienced a flood due to an improperly installed valve. We are selling the condo back to the builders (as it was brand new when purchased and this was VERY unforseen). We will be purchasing a new home and rolling all equity into it (there will be about $20,000 in equity with the buy-back due to current market value). Will we have to pay capital gains on the $20,000? Will this fall under "Unforseen Circumstances" and qualify for a lower exclusion? Or is there something else??? THANKS!

I currently claim Federal-1 & State-0 for my tax deductions.
(I'm in California, and single)

Question: I am currently pregnant and was wondering do I have to wait until my baby is born to claim
Fed-2 State-2
or can I do it now.

My main concern is not having to owe taxes come April 15, 2008

Everyone tells me to put ONE exemption on form W-4, but if I do what the form says, it should be 2. Can someone explain? I'm single with one job:

A: Enter "1" for yourself if you one else can claim you as a dependant... TRUE... so I enter 1

B: Enter "1" if you are single and have only one job; or... TRUE... so I enter another 1

H: Add lines A-G and enter total here: 1+1=2

So why isnt it 2 exemptions for a single person with one job??

Should I put 1 or 2 ???

I worked for 3 months this year as an independent contractor, making $5,400.00 (no fed. taxes withheld or paid). Yesterday I started a new job as an employee ($30,000/yr.). How much should I have deducted per pay check to make up for that time I did not have anything taken out? Either number of allowances, flat dollar amount or %...I don't have any dependents, nor do I own any property.
