With the ban on public smoking, and the news that it's hit the pubs in scotland and ireland hard, we can expect the UK in it's entirety to see an overall downturn in smoking and drinking.

Now,much as I like the thought of a smoke free nation (except at wedding when a Cigar's not optional!) does this mean there's gonna be a huge chunk of tax missing?

Is the government gonna find this missing tax by screwing it out of us tax payers in other means?

I love to read graphic novels and don't like to buy them. But some of them you can't get at the library so I was forced to buy them. Now I have a whole bunch of them. But with little room to store them. So I thought maybe I could donate them to the library, get a tax deduction, then just get them from the library if I every want to read them again.

I owe the IRS $76. I know this isn't much and should have been paid in April. I laid my papers up and forgot all about it. Point is it wasnt paid. Now that I have found all the information, I would like to pay it. I was curious though how much I will owe in penalties. Does anyone know of where I can find out? Do they use a percentage of what u owe times how late it is or something to that effect. Any info would be nice. Thnx

Growing up, my parents said donation my clothing and other things to Goodwill and like organizations wasn't worth reporting on my taxes because I didn't earn enough throughout the year to make a difference. Now that I live on my own, is there a salary level where donations of this nature will prove beneficial?

My mother passed away in 2004 and my step dad stayed her house, after finding out that he was not paying the mortgage I kicked him out and moved in 9 months ago, the property deed was put in my name but the mortgage is still in my moms name then I find out that he has not paid the taxes scence she passed away (yep, 2004). I have no way to come up with 6000.00 and i just received a letter saying that someone put in a application for my deed and I only have a week to come up with the money to stop it (there is NO way to get the money) so what will happen next? Can the person who gets the deed show up at my door and tell me and four small kids to get out?

I live in a condominium that is surrounded by a private road. The road is for the use of the home owners whose houses surround our condo building. The "legend" has it that the fence belongs to the home owners who also own the private road but the fence appears to be located on our condo property and definately encloses our building. The fence needs to be repaired or replaced and we do not want to spend the money if the fence does not belong to us.
If you are looking at the fence from our building you would see our parking lot, the fence, the swale, the private road, the front yards and the the homes.
Bonus points to anyone who can come up with an answer that doesn't cost money. Thanks!

I purchased a building in a unzoned area 2 years ago. I used it as a primary residence for those two years. I have since purchased another property that I am living in now. I would like to use the original property for a business. The tricky part is that the original property is owner financed and roughly half paid off. Can I deduct any part of my current mortgage or original purchase price from my future taxes?

My Mother in law is selling us her home for way under Fair Market Value. The mortgage broker wants her to give us a "Gift of Equity". How much can she give us without paying taxes on the gift. We are married with three children (not too sure if you need to know that, but I think she is allowed to gift to her grandkids too).
Appraisal=$245,000
Selling for=$116,000
GOE= $129,000
This will allow me to bring in zero money down and dropped our interest rate tremendously. Having said that, I don't want to harm her in anyway with paying alot of gift tax.
