First, get a job; second, get laid off or fired from that job; third, contact your state's department that handles unemployment and they will tell you what you need to do next.

You will first need to go to your local IDES (Illinois Department of Employment Security) office, which depending on where you live will be ?DES office. From there you will fill out a form which looks as if it is an application, listing all of your previous jobs. You will need to know the addresses and phone numbers, so take that information with you. They will then compute a print out of your wages. You wouldd have had to work at least 6 months out of a year to get decent benefits. I will also let you know the wages to be paid out will come from the prior quarter. For instance, if you are trying to get benefits now you would have to had wages in the latter part of 2006. After completing the forms in the office they will if available see you that day or schedule a phone interview. You will receive a letter in the mail detailing if you are eligible and what you can expect to receive as payments.

First you have to apply. You can probably do this online from your state website. If they don't allow online filing, you can at least find info there on how to do it.

When they receive your application, they'll contact your former employer and ask why you were terminated. Then based on what you've told them and what the employer has to say, they'll make a determination on whether or not you're eligible, and if you are, how much you'll get per week, and notify both you and the employer of their determination. (If you're turned down but feel their info is inaccurate, you can appeal the decision.)

After that, if you were awarded benefits, you'll get checks for the specified period of time. During that time, you will most likely be required to show that you are available for work and are looking for a job.

Find the location of your employment services station or workforce or whatever it is called where you live. Gather up whatever information you have about where you were employed; pay stubs, notices, yadda. Then let your feet do the walking to wherever and start filling out forms.

Depends on where you live, but usually you go to an office of "Workforce Services" or "Employment Services" for your state. You will have to fill out some forms and they will verify your income.

Look on your state's website for more information of how to apply in your state.
