Normally if you are long a dividend-paying stock, you GET the dividend paid TO you. But if you are short a dividend-paying stock, YOU have to pay your broker that dividend. I know when you EARN a dividend while you own the stock you file that on your taxes as dividends earned. But where do you file/claim for dividends PAID on your tax return when you happen to be short the stock and have to PAY the dividend?

I see the IRS has a table to look up the STATE sales tax based on your income range. But what if you live in one of the UNLISTED states, then how to you know what number to use for the "Local general sales tax rate?" Many states have A, B, or C listed under the local section, but many states aren't listed at all. Please explain, with links if possible.

The tax code is so complicated and here is one example. please help. My sister is a Canadian Permanent Resident but she is coming to US to study as F1 student. I will provide support for her but I am not sure if I can claim her as my dependent on the tax return. Here is what I got from IRS web site:

"You cannot claim a person as a dependent unless that person is a U.S. citizen, U.S. *resident alien*, U.S. national, or a resident of Canada or Mexico"

1) F-1 students are generally treated as *nonresident* alien with the first 5 calendar years; However
2) my sister has been Canadian resident which seem to meet the citizenship test

Since the paragraph says "or" - I guess my sister meets the resident of Canada category? There is no explanation or anything to define :resident of Canada". Any pointers to articles or IRS publishes or answers are appreciated.

I am a US citizen and currently receiving grants becouse of low Adjusted Gross Income. Some of my friends in Turkey make money from their websites and receive these money via Paypal. They asked me to take out the money from Paypal and to wire the money after taking some commision.

Here are the questions:

Will I need to pay tax for the whole amount if I take out their money from Paypal and send them after taking some commision from the money? Also, do I need to pay tax for the whole amount or just for the commision? Will it effect my AGI, because I do not want to lose my grants.

Thank you.

Anyone have any info on this? Is the paperwork easier than in the US? Any complaints?

No one in the world likes taxes. The people in the US have it worse because of the headaches the get when dealing with them.

I wanted to sign up for direct deposit for my taxes and realized I didn't put my entire account number in the boxes... I know that this will only delay my return and I still will get it... but I'm getting anxious about getting the money as I have unplanned bills that I just received and would like to see if I can get the money as soon as possible.
