You and your wife get over to the nearest office of Internal Revenue Service-Taxpayer Assistance Division. Not only will they answer all your tax questions, but they will file your taxes for you for free. Make sure you bring all paperwork,W-2's, ID on both of you and Social Security cards for the whole family.

You and your spouse should sit down with Form W-4 and complete the worksheets on page 2. This will help you determine the correct withholding amoung for your tax situation. The withholding number you arrive at will be the TOTAL number of exemptions you should claim between you. If you both work it's quite possible that you will need to claim zero withholding exemptions and possibly even need to designate some additional withholding each pay period.

Guess that the responder above me never heard of a "show salesman." My company has quite a few -- they sell our products at trade shows. And a single earner with 4 kids who claims zero is screwing himself every payday, but that's his problem, I guess. Personally I get no kick out of making interest free loans to the government.

I am a father of 4 kids and my wife is a house wife. The best way is to claim yourself, with no dependents. have $20 fed. $5 state extra withheld. from each check. you won't get much of a check. But I sure do injoy the $12 grand on may returns.
Of course when you file your taxes at the end of the year claim all dependents.

Claim as much as you can, but take that extra money and put it in savings. Get professional tax preparer advice on this, and you will be able to pay your taxes and have money left over.
