I have a friend that did her federal income tax return but did not do her state income tax return ~ a couple of questions on this:

~ What will happen to her? Will she get in trouble, like being put in jail?
~ Can she still file beings that it's past the deadline?

Thank you for your responses, ahead of time!!!

Yes, she can (and should) file a state return.

Most states do not penalize you for late filing if they owe you a refund but I believe that some do.

If she owes, there will pena.ties and interest but, assuming she gets it done right away, they should be too much.

Extremely unlikely that she'd be put in jail, but would likely get a letter from the state assessing taxes and penalties, or notifying her that she needs to file and pay a penalty.

Yes, she can and must still file even though it's after the deadline.

She can file for an extension and then file the taxes. They will not put her in jail, at most the will assess a late penalty. They don't want to put you in jail, they want the money.
