Hi,

I have been in the US for the last 2 yrs, first on a F-1 and now on an H-1B visa.

I recently sold a property in India and had some capital gains which I plan to invest in another residential property there. As a result I am claiming a capital gains exemption in India.

Is there any tax liability on these capital gains in the USA? I would appreciate if you could also send me the sources for your response.

Thanks

I'm an amateur photographer, and am thinking about submitting some of my pictures to stock photo sites. There's a small amount you get paid if your pictures are uploaded (some are 20%, some are 25 cents, etc). I really don't anticipate making very much, maybe a few hundred per year at the very, extreme most. I was wondering if I would have to report this on my taxes as income - even if it's only $100-$200/year. Is there a limit, or is it just all income, no matter how much/little?

Just wondering if anyone knows a roundabout estimate of what I will get back from Uncle Sam if I made roughly 37000 and I have one child. Took roughly 4200 from me. Not itemizing anything .

I just turned 18 and my parents didn't claim me on their taxes, I've worked for 3 different companies over the course of the year 2006 on account of me moving so often. I have received my W2's from 2 of the three jobs I worked this year. I haven't received my W2's from the third job and when I called them to ask if they had been sent out they said yes. I submitted the proper address change paperwork to all the local post offices. The last time i spoke with this company they said they had sent out my W2's and they should be arriving in the mail within 7 to 12 days this was mid Febuary it is now mid March. What should I do is this even something i need to be worried about since i turned 18 in 2007 and the taxes are 2006? I want to file because I think I'll get a return but I don't know what to do? Can I even file without these last W2's or is this fraud? I don't want to get audited or anything! Nor do I want to pay someone to do something that is impossible without said papers! Help me?

It lowers the total income on schedule c but I earned the money. Say I claimed 12000
but had 4000 in standard mileage it drops my earned income credit to 8000 as my earned income. Should I just not claim my milage? With 12000 income my credit would
be around 4500.(money refunded)- taxes on
12000

I have to file tax returns for the years 2001, 2002, and 2003, and was curious if its possible to skip all the excessive paperwork and just simply use an "E-file" system to process my old unfiled tax returns. How would I go about doing that? Is it possible? If so, what tricks are their to making say the current web sites register for different dates other then the default current year? Any suggestions?

Can't seem to find anything on the internet or the IRS Publication 523 that says how LONG one needs to work for the employer to get the reduced tax benefit.

Hey Guys,

I just wanted your opinion. I made a mistake by sending my Federal Tax Return to Harrisburg instead of the usual PA IRS.

What do you think will happen?
Should I call them or do you think they will return my tax forms to my home address?

Heres the whole story. I worked in Iowa for half the year and in Wisconsin for the other half. (I moved to Wisconsin half way through the year). I was going to get my taxes done for me at H&R Block but my mother insisted that her friend do them. He claims to be an accountant. This year I was independent. I was a depentant the past few years. I paid in a decent amount of money from my paychecks all year. I usually get back whatever I pay in. Im still in college and nothing has changed, so I thought I would get it all back this year. However, I only recieved about $300 back. He said I had to pay into Iowa because I worked and lived in two states . I think that my Mom might have claimed me so that she could recieve more money or I just got ripped off all the way around. PLEASE HELP!

I own two properties : a condo that I live in, and a condo in another state that I rent out.

Can I claim the mortgage interest of both properties as deductible in my return?

I did my taxes using Turbotax and, with the depreciation, I made a loss on my rental unit. Does this affect anything?

I've been offered a job in the US by a US company. I'm Canadian and will need to fill out both a US and Canadian tax return. Its a 6 month to a year contract. The job offers to split my salary between a rate of $28/hr and $153/day (7 day) per diem. I know each state allows so much per day in per diem tax free and I'll fall well within that limit. I'll be keeping my house in Canada and will rent in the States while I'm working there. I'm alittle worried about the per diem getting taxed in Canada. It won't show up on my W2 because its tax free in the US. Should I worry about this and save some cash for taxes just in case. I know in Canada its really grey area stuff. What should I do?
