The Ancient Greek aphorism; gnothi seauton: "Know yourself" was inscribed in the pronaos of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. What is involved in obtaining self-awareness, and how does one profit from knowing oneself?

I'm asking this in philosophy, because I keep getting tautological answers in the more obvious categories. I need some lateral, creative thinking on this.

People are always shocked that I LOVE jokes, hearing them, telling them. I love to be silly, goofy, but I'm also very SERIOUS.

Why is this seen as a CONTRADICTION? I am really, really curious.

(It almost seems that culturally people separate themselves, as if -- well you tell me.... )

For example, if you gave your lover a ring...and s/he cheated on you--would you request the ring back?

If you intended to support a friend's church, and the friend back stabbed you--would you still support the church?

How much is your good word worth...if affected by the negative actions of others?

i mean, we all know that theres is actually something going on all over places, the war in iraq, the global warming, the people arent to helpful with all the crimes and deaths, everything is going on, no one ever knows what can possibly happen next, were not THAT prepared for another terrorism(i hope not) but is people really prepared if something like that happens? people go here and there like if there actually wasnt anything going on, but there is. this once time i was walking with some people and then from one instance to another i said, hey guys, did you know the world war 3 just broke up? 2 of them were like, Ohh MY GOSH, your kidding me, they got scared but dont they notice that it can actually happen? i dont mean me, i dont really care if a world war brakes down but im trying to show a point, people arent prepared, something can happend and they dont notice.
