Opera: how to appreciate?
I would like a guideline to appreciate opera, besides going to one. And where would be a nice city to live that's full of classical music, etc? Are we to read about an opera before going? Is knowing the plot/understanding Italin necessary? Tell me what is prerequisite in appreciation of opera. And...don't forget to recommend some.. And oh, I want to know because others have loved opera and I never really had the knowledge to understand why.
thanks in advance.

I have taken voice and piano lessons since I was in third grade. I am a junior in high school now. I have been to All-State four times, and two colleges have already told me they want me to come sing there. My chorus and drama teachers always tell me how good I am, how much they needed me, etc. I have never had a main part in a musical. I know that some of the people who get main parts are not as good as I am. Am I wrong to want a main role and to feel cheated when lesser trained people get bigger parts?

I play the cello, but I can not make myself practice enough. I have to play at least 1/2 hours a day, but I can not make myself do that. I usually forget that I have to practice. Any suggestions?

Recently I was wondering: What changes physically, when a singer change pitches?

It seems to me that you just open your mouth and the pitch comes out. From what I can tell, it's mostly a mental game, but still, something has to change physically to change the pitch. Sure there are exercises for legato, tone, vowel quality, range, etc. But how do human beings change pitch? Is it the vocal folds? The shape of the mouth? Does it have to do with the throat?

FYI: I'm a voice major in college, so I know how to sing (and do sing, daily). I'm not asking how to get better at singing. :-)

Just curious.

In Chopins Noctorne Op 9-12 in the 12th measure the right hand plays the chord a1-f2 for 3/8 while the left hand is supposed to play three chords of eights - e-1 / e0 c1 / h0 c1 a1 - as a result for the last chord of the left hand you should play the same note (an a1) already held by the right hand - so do you even play it? If yes how are you supposed to do that? If no why is it written down?

Thanks in advance for your answers

Has anyone wondered that, since there are so many bands or groups or artists who create so many different types of music, that soon there will be no more unique melodies or beats to create? Is that even possible?

The rules are simple:
* Plays should be 3 minutes or less.
* No characters.
* No fourth wall.
* We are on a stage. We know this. We're not in Victorian England or in a diner in 1969.
* Each play contains up to six ensemble members.
* We have light and sound capabilities.
* Rules can all be bent and broken.

I'm auditioning for my school play, and the monologue we're supposed to read is as follows-
" Miss Ethel Peas. Hotel Priscilla. Regret to inform you. Stop. Great Uncle Cyrus killed. Stop. In freak threshing accident. Stop! What a way to go! Well, my condolences to your family. What, no family? Sad to be all alone in the world. But step into my office and enjoy a soothing cup of green tea. One of the mysteries of the Orient! By the time you finish, you be calm and quiet, and ready for a very long nap!"
If you have any tips, they would be greatly appreciated!

We're in the sixth grade, but we're still pretty good. The talent show is in like, march or something. WE will only have four minutes to perform. Also, if you have and ideas for costumes or anything like that, list them. Thanks! : )

I love classical music since it allows both analytical and emotional expressions. So do other types, but I will stick with classical for the purpose of questioning. In speaking with a professional cellist, he mentioned how in playing spanish music, he must acutally be very analytical although many times spanish music is very passionate. I would imagine that a life of music would allow more natural freedom of expression with emotions, but it is impossible to play classical music well without a fine control of emotions. I want to know what you think.

I am trained in singing classical music, by this I mean operatic stuff, chorale music....Ave Maria, the works. I'm a soprano 1 meaning my range is usually very high.

However, I have a hard time singing pop music. Is this normal? If you can sing one type of music--in this case classical, yet not sing pop well?
