I remember reading somewhere that hundreds of years ago, France 'kidnapped' the pope for a couple of years. When they decided to send him back, he died on the way back. The Vatican and France then both chose a new pope, leading to two popes in office. Since there was only supposed to be one pope, they decided to have a revote, where they would choose one single pope. They did, but the old popes did not want to give up their power, so there were then three popes. This led to the power of French kings to appoint cardinals at their pleasure... reason Cardinal Richelieu was still a cardinal after siding with the Protestants.

fact?

Myth or truth? Piazza Navona Statues on the fountain of the 4 rivers built by Bernini are shielding their eyes in horror of Borromini's church of St.Agnes...implying that the church was out of proportion (or would have been, since some say the fountain precedes the church!). Was it a case of 'sour grapes' for not having been chosen to build the church? Is there any historical truth to this?

Hi, I'm doing a case study on Albert Speer and have "Inside the third reich", his written book, and another book of him being interviewed, but am finding it hard to find any DVD documentarys on him.

I dont want all of my study to consist of bookwork as I want to show I used technology, like the internet. Does any of you know of any english subtitled or spoken documentarys on him? The closest I've found was Speer und Er" but thats in German and I dont think theres subtitles.

The history channel has only shown him in small parts when ever they referred to Hitler when he was in Obersalzberg.

I mean literally. Apparently even though he hated cigarette smoke, drunkenness and recreational drug use, he was on a lot of uppers and downers and increasingly so as his empire crumbled. This may have been a significant factor in his bizarre behaviour. Just curious.

(apparantly Goering was a major morphine addict among other things but its hard to confirm as people rarely talk about this aspect of Nazi history)

P.S. - for the record I hate the Nazis and everything they stood for, I'm just a student of History and trying to understand what went on in this dark period of human history.
