Started when Thomas Jefferson and John Adams ran against eachother in the election of 1800. Thomas Jefferson wanted to follow the Constitution to the "T" while Adams wanted a strong, big, central government and thought that the Costitution needed to be interpreted. Thomas Jefferson basically helped start the Democratic-Republicans while John Adams started the Federalists.

It began with the Federalists (pro-Constitution) and the anti-Federalists (for stronger states' rights) before the Constitution was adopted.
