I remember reading somewhere that hundreds of years ago, France 'kidnapped' the pope for a couple of years. When they decided to send him back, he died on the way back. The Vatican and France then both chose a new pope, leading to two popes in office. Since there was only supposed to be one pope, they decided to have a revote, where they would choose one single pope. They did, but the old popes did not want to give up their power, so there were then three popes. This led to the power of French kings to appoint cardinals at their pleasure... reason Cardinal Richelieu was still a cardinal after siding with the Protestants.

fact?

Yes,
From 1378 to 1417 there were two and later three popes.
The two contenders were in Rome and in Avignon in France.
This is called "The Great Schism" (although the schism between the East and Western churches was greater, and this term is sometimes mistakenly applied to that)
It was ended by the Council of Constance in 1417

In addition to what Fr. Peter said, remember only one of the popes was the actual Pope. The other popes are called anti-popes.

The official Popes from 1378 to 1417 were:
201. Gregory XI (1370-78)
202. Urban VI (1378-89)
203. Boniface IX (1389-1404)
204. Innocent VII (1404-06)
205. Gregory XII (1406-15)
206. Martin V (1417-31)

With love in Christ.
