The Parthenon is one of the most impressive and majestic architectural achievements in the world. The word inself means House of the Virgin (referring to Athena). It has 8 doric columns on the front and 17 on the sides (if you count the corner ones twice). It was built entirely of white marble from Penteli, except for the foundations which are built of poros stone. The Parthenon was the work of the architect Ictinos. The Parthenon used a number of optical refinements that bring the greatest aesthetic pleasure to the eye. For example, the columns are not perfectly straight, but swell and taper. the steps are not straight but curved. These curvatures give the building a dynamic feel. What I like the very best is that when u enter the main gate of the Acropolis, the Parthenon appears in front of you.....but not facing you directly...u are viewing it at an angle, the same one u see in all the pictures. Imagine what a breath-taking sight this is!!!! The white marble against the blue sky is awesome. I hope this was of help to you.
