I am in need of information about a sword that my grandfather found in an attic in the 20's. It is about 3 feet long with strange writing on the blade. I have sent pictures to the smithsonian, and also to a place in Russia to see if they could determine the origin of this sword, and possibly identify the language.

Smithsonian felt it was very close to a Kossack sword, stated the handle was made of bone and agreed that there is indeed writing on the blade but had no idea of the origin of the language.

When I received the information back from Russia they said it looked like a Kossack sword but was probably a bit older, they also had no idea what language is inscribed on the blade but agree that it is writing.

Does anyone know of other places I might be able to find this information? The sword was used in battle that is for certain, its very well balanced in the hand and the smithsonian said it appeared to still have bloodlike stains on the steel.

Thanks for reading.

The French aid supplied to the American rebels in the revolution must have strained their resources. And I can't imagine how the just created USA would be able to repay France for their aid. Did the cost of foreign involvement make France go bankrupt? Their revolution was only a few years later. Must have been some connection to it.

Robert E. Lee (the general of the Confederate forces during the American Civil War) said this: "I cannot trust a man to control others who cannot control himself." Why did he say that? Perhaps it was something in his experience as a general? or was it something else?

Between 1914 and the spring of 1917, the European nations engaged in a conflict that became known as World War I. While armies battled in Europe, the United States remained neutral. In 1916 Woodrow Wilson was elected President for a second term, largely because of the slogan "He kept us out of war." Events in early 1917 would change that hope.

In January of 1917, British cryptographers deciphered a telegram from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German Minister to Mexico, von Eckhardt, offering United States territory to Mexico in return for joining the German cause. To protect their intelligence from detection and to capitalize on growing anti-German sentiment in the United States, the British waited to present the telegram to President Wilson. Meanwhile, frustration over the effective British naval blockade caused Germany to break its pledge to limit submarine warfare. In response, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Germany.

Please settle a bet. I say that horses are not native to North America, and that European explorers first brought horses to America. Or maybe they came up from South America?

Anyway, my friend says that horses have always been on North America, long before explorers or the first European settlors first arrived.

Who's right? Sources are appreciated. Thanks!

I'm trying to find primary sources (political cartoons, articles, or personal statements) from the time of the Cold War from both sides. Finding US ones is easy, but does anyone have any idea where I could find USSR ones? The difficulty is largely in needing translated ones, as only English is going to help me.
