Mussolini had a tremendously inflated sense of his own importance. He was very intelligent (he was fluent in 4 languages) but he was seriously deluded about Italy's economic capacity. At first he was amused by Hitler's admiration but when Hitler took Austria without bothering to inform him he was about to do so, events took on a momentum that Mussolini couldn't stop, no matter how hard he postured in different ways. The test came when Germany invaded France. According to the Axis Pact of Steel, Italy was Germany's ally and should have gone to war with France immediately. But Mussolini waited until France was on the verge of collapsing.
Both Hitler and Mussolini underestimated the USA. Hitler despised the USA on racial grounds and was blind to our industrial capacity. They both noted the isolationism of the American public and overestimated the influence of the peace party.
If given a choice, Mussolini would have preferred it if the USA had stayed out of the war. This was made impossible when
Germany declared war on the USA (Dec. 10th, I believe of 1941).

Well, Mussolini declared war on the US after Pearl Harbor.
And after the successfull Anglo-American landing in Sicily in 1943, most fellow Fascists turned on him, the king dismissed him as Prime Minister, and he was arrested.

of course not. the entire axis knew that if america enter the war the extra man power and such would prove very hard to defeat. it's not like germany had planes that could attack america, at least not yet. japan had no choice but to attack america because they had were losing a lot of resources and if they did not take the Philippines with their resources they would have starved to death. they attacked america hoping that they could cripple them enough to get what they need. if america had stayed out of the war (and of course germany staying out of russia or have japan attack them) the axis could have taken over england and possibility much more.
basically as long as america stayed out they could have taken over all of europe and possbiliy asia as well.
