The advent of machine guns and improvements to artillery had drastically altered the battlefield. However the Generals on both sides were still fighting wars they way they had for decades. This led to massive casualties and the new battlefield favored the defender. As a result nobody could really make any progress against the enemy. It turned into a war of attrition. The idea was to simply out last the enemy and wait for him to give up from a lack of soldiers. This kind of thing takes a long time, especially against an enemy that is convinced they can win the same way. It really wasn't until the US joined the war, bringing in a huge new supply of men and materiel, that the balance really shifted to the Allies.

No one really thought that the war would last that long. When war was declared, it was hoped by diplomats on both sides that there could be some kind of peace before christmas. It took time between partial mobilisation and full mobilisation.

It also took time to decide who was on who's side - who would fight and who would not.

While France and Russia were at war with Germany and Austria in July 1914, it was not until the German invasion of Belgium that brough the British Empire into the war. Also Turkey, which would come into it on the side of Germany and Austria-Hungary, did not come into the war until the Breslau incident. Also Italy was not sure where she stood and would pull out of the alliance.

One of the main problems that faced the major powers was the mobilisation of allied troops. A major European power such as Russia took months to fully mobilise her vast army.
It took a further few months for the Russians, the French and the British to co-ordinate some kind of war plan - and how to best pool their resources to defeat Germany.

While it took the allies time to co-ordinate their attack, the Germans had already implemented the Schlieffen plan and invaded France, and prevented Russia from assisting france.

Russia was also totally unprepared to fight the war. While Russian troops kept Germany occupied in the East, Russia would be a burden as she required supplies for her under-supplied army.

Took time for Britain to mobilise her vast empire and get ships to relay troops across the pacific into europe. logistical nightmare.

With France barely holding on and Russia on its way out, it was an uphill Batte for the British against the Germans who were already well entrenched and did not have far for supplies and manpower to be brought to its front lines

one reason was the fact that there were many stalemates because of trench warfare. also france was losing as many soldiers as Germany. it came to the point where the Allies almost lost the war if not for the United States coming in at the right moment to help win the war. Also the territory that the war was being mainly fought on was foreign to the Allied Powers.

Artillery and small arms had just made some major technologic leaps forward. It's hard to advance into fields of machine gun fire with artillery support. Command, control, communications and intelligence were advancing but relative to the firepower of the time were still somewhat behind. On the seas, Jutland was inconclusive, and the battleships were simply too expensive to risk in more aggressive operations. Significant advances in armor, communications and doctrine were needed to allow the more free-flowing possibilities of the next war.
