Vaclav Hasik married Terezie Chochola in Chicago IL on 20 May 1901. In the April 1910 census, Terezie/Theresia is listed as the wife of Joseph Kopta with 2 children, Joseph age 8 and Antionette age 6. However, Terezie and Joseph Kopta married 20 Aug 1910 in Chicago IL.

On 10 March 1911, Terezie purchased a house at 7805 Drexel Ave, Chicago IL in her name only. The house was paid in full on 16 Jan 1913.

In Feb 1941, the children submitted delayed birth registrations as Joseph Hasik and Antionette Hasik. They said their father was James Hasik, locksmith, born in Bohemia. They were born at 7538 Maryland Ave, Chicago.

My guess is between Aug 1902 (nine months before Antionette was born) and Aug 1910 (the Kopta marriage) Vaclav left his family. I think they stayed in contact since the most likely source for the house money in 1911 was a death/insurance payment.

I can't find a death for Vaclav in Cook County IL.

They came to the United States in the late 1800's or early 1900's, and changed their surname to Walbeck.

When women sign their name with two last names hypened....what exactly does that mean? Does that mean they are married and have kept their maiden name as well as added their married name on, or they are engaged and just putting both last names to get everything straight?

Example: Amy Smith-Bly

Thanks!

I am looking for information on what area of Finland this name comes from. My great grandfather Mike (Mika or Mikko?) was the last known member of my family that I know of to use the name. When he immigrated to the US, he was forced to shorten it to Jarve in order to find work. Jarve is a fairly uncommon name as it is and I'm having a hard time finding sources that would help me find his place of origin. Does anyone have any advice or know anything about my family?

I just started a tiny bit of genealogy research. I found one guy who lived from 1770-1884.

Um... do you think I should trust this as I research these people? Or, if it were your research, would you assume there was some error in there?

It's not a totally unreasonable age and I do have some long-lived people in my ancestry, but do you genealogy experts find people to be that old centuries ago?

I've recently been told that this is my father's biological parents' last name (he was adopted, obviously). He's not curious about them, so I don't want to go around him and get into any in-depth searches, but I'm curious.

Someone has told me that Phalen is an old-English name...Someone else has said that it's a Jewish name.

Anyone out there have more info?

My family made a family tree on Ancestry.com using that One World Tree and it says that one of my distant grandparents from the 1500s or 1600s was born in Jamaica when their family moved there from Great Britain. Could this be true? Are the records fake? Is this an okay thing to say as how my family got here?
