Adri’s answer is correct.

It is true that they are 17 „Kiver“ records in the Ellis-island records. Five of them came not from Hungary, and 12 of them came from some place with 4 different recorded spellings: Merk, Meck, Mierk and Mork. (Mérk is a village in eastern Hungary.)

But they are also 168 „Kover“ records there.

„Kover“ is English spelling of „Kövér“ (the meaning is fat or fatso) and it is a common Hungarian surname.

I also have never met anybody having a surname „Kiver“.

I am sure that „Kiver“ is just misspelling of „Kövér“, an error of immigration officer.

„ö" is a vowel non-existing in English and different from „o“ and „i“, so such a mistake of immigration officer is understandable.

This reminds me the old well known joke about a chinese immigrant O'Brien.

You may find the pronunciation of Hungarian alphabet here: http://www.magyarora.com/magyar/shortaudio.html

Immigration records show that KIVER is the common Hungarian spelling for the name. If you sign up for a free account at http://www.ellisisland.org you can open this link and see the records on all 17 Kivers who came over from Hungary to the US.

Hi! I've never heard this name before, but we usually pronounce the words simply as they are written (pronouncing every letter clearly) - and vica versa.

Maybe I can help you with the vowels:)
i - like the pronounciation in word 'interest' or 'river'
e - like the pronounciation in word 'end' or 'spend'

L.E. : I am sorry, I misunderstood you before:) So if you are looking for the correct spelling (not pronounciation) - as I mentioned above, I don't know such hungarian name (although it can be a real surname), but it might be 'Kövér', f.e. as you asked.
