One of my great-uncles decided he wanted to get married after he got back from serving in WWI - preferably to a cousin - which he did. He had migrated to Australia prior to the war, and after the war went to England and married a cousin in 1919. He and his wife returned to Australia and had 2 kids.

Why did he prefer to marry a cousin over someone else? Was that acceptable back then - or was my uncle just a bit strange?

It seems Ancestry.com has a monopoly on census records. If you want to look up ONE person, you have to sign up for a 14day "FREE trial." Actually, 14 days free on a subscription. Don't forget to call and cancel!!
Is there a site I can look up a 1860 census a "pay a fee as you go" type deal?

It's traditional in my culture to include the mother's maiden name as part of the child's name. For example--Joe Michael Smith (mom's name) Jones (dad's name). But I didn't do this. How do I start to get my son's name changed in California?

In the 19th century, what would the label imbecile suggest about the mental capacity of someone. In current society, someone with for example: a classified 'mental illness' of some sort, adhd, trisomy 21 or autism: how would any of these be labelled for instance.
Just curious to know on what basis they categorised anyone as imbecile, idiot or other class. How many classes were there in all. Thanks for your input. Just trying to understand the uk system.

I am researching my family history. An ancestor in Chicago in the late 19th century is listed with the occupation of "traveler". It appears to be different from "traveling salesman" (there are other people with that occupation listed), so I'm not sure what it could be. Any suggestions?
