It seems Ancestry.com has a monopoly on census records. If you want to look up ONE person, you have to sign up for a 14day "FREE trial." Actually, 14 days free on a subscription. Don't forget to call and cancel!!
Is there a site I can look up a 1860 census a "pay a fee as you go" type deal?

www.familysearch.org (the LDS church site)has the entire 1880 and 1881 (UK) census transcribed and indexed.
Are you familiar with usgenweb? this is the volunteer network the entire country. Sites vary.. but many have the census transcribed... some of the better sites will have the original images.
Many local libraries subscribe to both or either Ancestry or Heritage quest. Meaning, you have to go there.. bummer, but free.
As mentioned, we have many generous volunteers on board here, if you post the specifics of what you are hoping to find. A nice thing about posting the ancestor question is that you might pick up the census from one person, another knows how to find the cemetery record, someone else knows a fantastic hidden site for that locality...
Ted is always good for some dry humor.
edit- no, they don't have a monopoly, they have just invested the money to make it available. You can purchase microfilm of any census film, or SK enterprises (think that is the name) also sells the cds of scanned images.

Heritage Quest has them too.

If you live near a national Archives or a really big Library (Peabody at Yale, UC Berkeley in Berkeley, some others.) you can drive there and read the census on microfilm until you get seasick.

Many Family History Centers have census image subscriptions. You have to dress up and leave the bottle behind, but it is free. (I bought an Ancestry subscription. I do some of my census surfing in my underwear from home. I like to drink while I surf. Old vine Zinfandel and old dead relatives, at midnight - what a combination!)

Ancestry is selling convenience, not information. If you want to buy an airline ticket, a week's stay in a hotel and 7 days worth of meals, you can look at the census for "free" in a number of places. If you wait until a FHC is open, you can look at it for free in your town.

Hi Olive!
There are many, many sites out there with wonderful tools to
help us research our genealogy. Not all require payment....
I am going to make a list of some that I found, some of which I have personally used in the past....that may be of help to you.

Just never give up! There is always help to be found, and
I love doing genealogy....and to my great joy I have experienced some wonderful relationships with fellow searchers---most researchers enjoy helping others.....

I wish you all the best as you search for your family information.....do not forget that sometimes you can just
spell out your ancestor's name on a search engine (yahoo,
google, dogpile, etc.) and you'd be surprised the information that sometimes appears!

With some good fortune on your side, you may find other
distant relatives who are also working on the family tree,
and then share your great finds with one another!

Enjoy your research, Olive!

Not to my knowledge, but if you post your specific question, someone on this site will probably look it up for you. You can also write to the library or the historical society in the county you want to look up and ask someone there to do it. They may charge a small fee.

check your local library's homepage to see if they subscribe to heritagequest if they do you can use it for free with your library card. They may also subscribe to ancestry but you would have to go to the library to use it for free
