Looking for something new and different. Love non-fiction but I've read all the current bestsellers. I've also read most of the classics. Something literary in fiction or an interesting topic in non-fiction. Thanks

A few examples:

He acquired his sobriquet by his fondness for chuck steak, which in the wild days of his youth he cooked on a stick over gutter fires. [Herbert Asbury, "The Gangs of New York"]

It was only two weeks or so since she had the kid. And it was a pretty good size one. Eight pounds somethin. I dont know exactly, but somethin like that. She said it was like shittin a watermelon. Havin a kid. [Hubert Selby, Jr., "Last Exit to Brooklyn"]

...but she was a nymphet, and her ivory pale legs and lily neck formed for one memorable moment a most pleasureable antiphony (in terms of spinal music) to my desire for Lolita, brown and pink, flushed and fouled. [Vladimir Nabokov, "Lolita"]

there is a poem...please give your opinions on it...and suggestions too :) please!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dark and damp is the cave of life,
Where I lay with my eyes closed,
I dream of the time which passes by,
I breathe it through my soul.

I find it hard to catch it, whole,
to laugh and dance to its hopeful tune,
it slips away from the corners and cracks
of the little hands I own.

with a wistful smile
I watch it go,
with a wish, it would turn back,
Not even for a moment it
looks behind,
though I still watch it pass.

I look above to my dark sky,
No sun, to warm my eyes,
I find a hole in the rocky clouds,
That lets a light to shine...

It glows through the hole,
so bright and warm,
It fills my world with joy,
I lock it in my eyes and hair,
for not letting it slip by.

For me:
-Snape was in love with Lily
-Dumbledore is really dead but he agreed with Snape(he couldn't die asking grace...)
-Petunia, she knows something important..
-Snape is good and will die protecting Harry
-Harry will not die(it would be too obvious)
-In the end Harry will win against Voldemort, thanks to the only power he has more then Voldemort(that's important, Dumbledore said it many times)

(ps.sorry for my bad english, I'm italian)

I am specifically talking about India and Indian magazines but the question is open for all opinions and answers.

Can we blame ourselves for our poor taste in literature or, is it just that a magazine has a certain limit beyond which it is either afraid to or is unable to step out and explore.

Great children's Hindi magazines like Champak, Nandan, Balhans, ChandaMama which used to be published in multiple Indian languages and were loaded with great infotainment and literature when I was a kid. (I am only 19 myself) are still surviving in the market but a GREAT deal of compromise in terms of quality is apparent there. Same is the case with Kadambari, DharmYug (out of print) and other grown-ups' magazines.

What leads to the ultimate downhill fall of a good magazine?

(I am categorizing this question under "Books and Authors" and not "Entertainment> Magazines" because my concern is inclined specially towards literary magazines.)

I just recently bought Lovers and Players and loved it, so I got Hollywood Kids, which was a slight bit outdated (obviously) but I loved that too. Whats a good one to read next? And are any of her books sequels or prequels? I just hate reading out of order...

In 1889, a man and his daughter go to Paris for the Fair. They check into hotel, sign the register, get rooms next door. The daughter unpacks, goes next door to see her father. He says he's tired and will nap. She is fine and will take a walk. She returns at 3-4pm and knocks on his door. No reply. She goes to the desk. Not only no message, but her father is not registered at the hotel. The clerk shows her her signature with other signatures top and bottom, but not her father's. First she wants the manager. He says the room next door is unoccupied. Then she wants the police. An inspector appears. She can describe the wallpaper and furniture in her father's room. The inspector orders the room opened. Everything is different from what she said. Years later, the inspector says that her father was ill of cholera or plague when he checked in. He died soon after. They reconditioned the room to avoid jeopardizing the 1889 Paris Exposition.
