Your question is comparable to one asking oneself, why do i like this dish compared to the others.
But since you mentioned fantasy, I guess i am also in the same boat. In fantasy books , you are dragged in ,chained and you find your self enjoying the chains that bind you. It is easy for you connect with the characters and imagine what you would be like in such a world. Personally , I always imagine what life would be like to live in a castle and the like and such books provide ample oppurtunities to get deeper into MY fantasies . Its also a matter of taste. I am so used to reading about medieval lifestyles that I am not able to digest anyother kind of setting in books. The characters in fantasy books , good or bad are unique in every aspect and it is the urge to read about more unique characters such as them that drives us . Tyrion Lannister from the Song Of Ice And Fire series inspires and i cannot get enough of Bartimaeus. The urge to read about such characters and get involved in such fantastical and serious plots may what be you driving force.
Mystery books on the other hand ,focus mostly on suspense and intriguing the reader which we all fall for and dont regret it.
All i can say. : )
Happy Reading!!!!

Maybe because it's an experience like no other in our current lives. After all..
You're talking different worlds - a land with a lyrical name full of strange and beautiful creatures; often with a strong character that is destined for greatness; many of these books deal with good versus evil.
Then there's the magic-being able to move from place to place in a blink, conjuring items to help in a quest, casting spells for protection or healing.
It's just plain fun!
Mysteries, probably you like to work it out as you're reading along, gathering clues and making educated guesses. The protagonist (for the "cozy" mystery genre) is usually quirky, but very good at what he/she does. And in the end it's satisfying to have something resolved (even more so if you figured it out beforehand.)
I used to read primarily fantasy and still find it my favorite genre. How cool would it be to go off looking for a secret gemstone or finding out you fulfill a prophecy? That's for me!

Fantasy books are great books just to get lost in and forget about your present situation. The same goes with a good mystery. They have the ability to drag you in. I love a good fantasy book when things in my life are anything but.

People like different genres, but I do believe that sort of cliquey books are too, well, cliched. There are so many possibilities in fantasy and mystery, you don't ever know what will happen!

You know what? It's a very good thing that each of us likes different things. How scary it would be if we all only liked the same things. Perhaps everyone would be doctors. Then who would do the plumbing? the farming? the electrical work? and so on.
So appreciate that you have narrowed down what your favourites are and enjoy. There may be a time when that will change, and if so, enjoy the change also.

If you have an active imagination or are intellectually curious, these types of books can stimulate you better than other stories. Also, those genres may be better at providing an escape from the dullness or routine of real life. That's how it is for me.

The truth is avoided because it is often ugly and unpleasant. Life can be harsh and distressing. Therefore, we flock to books of fantasy and mystery because they are like oases in the desert.

I think everybody has that. I've met very few people who equally like every genre equally.
If it bothers you try checking out an audio book at the library of something you wouldn't normally read. I've done that a few times and I've really enjoyed it.

Some people just like escaping, and are interested by alternate reality.
Personally, fantasy books hurt my brain, but that's just me.
