Mineko Iwasaki, Geisha of Gion.

It is about the true life of Geisha, unlike Arthur Goldens "Memoirs of a Geisha".

WELL, as you can guess by the title - Ulysses S. Grant - 'Personal Memoirs' - the book is an autobiographical account of his life, mostly as a soldier, from West Point to the general-in-chief of all Union armies. "For their directness and clarity, his writings on war are without rival in American literature." "Perhaps the most revelatory autobiography of high command to exist in any language." "The most remarkable work of its kind since the 'Commentaries' by Julius Caesar."
As you can see by the praise of many others - this memoir is it.

"I know Why the Caged Bird Sings", by Maya Angelou. It's about her rocky childhood - an absentee mother, raised by grandparents in Alabama, a life of poverty.

Her writing is excellent. And she doesn't merely list the sorrows of her early years, she makes them, well, sing.
