The theme seems to be pretty much the same as the X-Men series, namely that we (wrongly) fear and discriminate against those who are somehow "different" from us.
"Storyline
The story line of this book is the tale of 6 children, who have an amazing power... the power of flight.
They are genetic "freaks", created by man by crossing human and avian DNA. These children start this story out in a hiding place, petrified of bieng found by the rest of humanity, as well as another "sub-race" also created by humans, by crossing human and wolf DNA, known to the children and us as the "erasers".
Both sub-species are unusually strong, fast and clever, however the erasers were created to hunt down and kill their targets, and can ide themselves from the rest of humanity.
This story takes us through emotional highs and lows, of fear, hope, comedy, betrayal, anger and (for some) sadness, especially when the youngest of this group of 6 is captured by erasers and taken back to the site of her "creation". The story also ends with a total shock, which i refuse to reveal, as it would completely spoil the whole book.
Characters
The book presents us with the characters that james Patterson featured in "When the Wind Blows" and "Lake House", and brings them into a new and exiting adventure of danger and adrenaline.
Max- the main character of the book, is clever, strong, brave and almost a mother figure to the rest of the group. although she is only 14, she has the mind and heart of a 25 year old, many have reffered to her as "kick-***"
Fang- the oldest of the boys in this book, he is strong and just as capable as max, he is observant in his tactics to fly from or fight against the erasers, a definate favorite for many.
Iggy- the blind "angel" his hearing is extremely finley tuned and he can hear erasers coming from a mile away, moody and headstrong, Iggy shows his youth at some points of the book, could his immaturety lead him and the others into trouble?
Gasman- the youngest boy, gasman is the comedian of the group, he is young and fairly weak incomparson to the older children however, his bravery makes up for his lack of strenght and stamina.
Angel- the youngest of the group, the favorite of Max, Angel is a young girl incarnate, she is somewhat naieeve, sweet as sugar, and has an infinite amount of potential, she has a power that goes even beyond her capability of flight.
My thoughts
My personal thoughts upon this book, were at first a little confused until i read "when the wind blows" and "lake house" and gained a further understanding, however with the characters the Patteson has given us as well as his addictive form of writing in very short chapters, some i have begun to love in writing, presents us with a top class book that almost everyone can read, i personally would say that this book is somewhat a young adult book, as some of the mannerisms are directed at the younger generation.
Reccomendations
I would, and have on many occations, reccomend this book to anyone who asked, however not only this book, the whole range of Patteson's work is just as readable if not more.
