Literature is a look into the soul of the writer. If the soul of the writer is not bared, the book is neither art nor literature.

An interesting choice of words to an interesting question!
Since Literature is divided into Fiction and Non-Fiction; it follows that Emotion has its voice in the written works of Fiction, and History has its voice in the written works of Non-Fiction. The best authors often make your Non-Fiction read like a novel, they also make your Fiction read as if it were true. As for the war between feelings and rational thinking; if it were not for Literature many a soul would die with great regret for not sharing those feelings with others, or for not informing others of the human brain's ability to understand.

Actually, I belive literature is like all the other arts in that it is a place where intellect and emotion meet. A book that does not engage both is simply a book, like a technical manual or a book of instructions. It is when both are engaged that literature is sparked.

No actually I think it's the perfect blending of both. You can't trick people into feeling an emotion without tricking their brains into thinking it's all real.
