Hi ya'll. I hadnt sent a question before and so i didnt know where to put this initially The heroine of this novel was the product of a gang rape. her mum abandoned her to her older sister. she was increasingly abused over a period of years and finally locked away in a cellar. she was only saved when the house above was burned down one day with her aunts family in it. she grew up to be a pretty nurse. married a police officer, but refused to have sex with him all that while: in fact, when he forcibly tried to make love to her at the end, he went insane. She used to set herself up to be raped so that she would use her strange powers to kill off intended molesters. it is my fault that i cant remember the name or the author, but was was kinda young when i read it. can someone help me out here? i read it in 1991 and again in 2000. about 800 pages in paperback, if that helps.

I still think that libraries are the best bargain of all time. The internet will never replace reading books. Do you agree?

I think old TP is getting very lazy as an author. He seems to just be reusing the same few "one trick horse" characters in increasingly weak situations padding out the whole lot with so many in-jokes that to get half of them you have to have memorised eah and every preceeding novel.
I used to really love Discworld books but now I don't enjoy them anymore. Do you agree or do you think they get better as they go along?

so if you want to say something, why not just say it? why bother couching it in gramatically incorrect and indirect vague phrases?

I guess I like some of the older more "classical" poets (eg Shakespeare and Yeats), but this New Yorker stuff just seems like random word association to me. comments?

If you have studied The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, could you please help me in answering the following essay question? Question:Explore how Margaret Atwood has effectively potrayed the totalitarian society as a totally insensitive system to the plight of women in the imaginary Gilead.
In other words, the question is asking how does Atwood put across her message that the totalitarian society is a totally insensitive system as it made the women's condition extremely bad. The main problem is that I am not able to find the three most appropriate ways Atwood puts this message across. The following are some of the ways authors try putting their message across:
- First person point of view
- Juxtraposition
- Biblical Illusion
- Similies
- Symbolism
- Stream of Consciousness (when the narrator's thoughts come out in such a way that they dont correspond with the present situation)
- Foreshadowing
- Conflicts
- Descriptions
So, out of all these ways, which ones apply to my Qn

I have just read book eleven, Knife of Dreams, and I found it plodding. To be perfectly honest, after book six, it just got complication upon complication for me. There is still more than enough magic to read on and buy the next damn book, but I really do not feel Jordan is still in the Light. Do you think we are stupid to fall for his money making scheme? Or is it just not possible to end the world in any meaningful way any shorter?

Read a while at school in the early 90's, don't know how long it had been out? Think it was about a boy with one parent who remarried and they gained a brother. The brother bullied them and made them so miserable they ended up drowning themselves in the lake or pond outside the house at the end. Bit depressing story but made an impact on me. Has anyone else read it or heard of it
