According to Newton Garver in his article “What violence is” found in Violence in Modern Literature, “the Latin root of the word ‘violence’ is a combination of two Latin words: the word ‘vis’ (force) and the past participle of ‘latus’ of the word ‘fero’ (to carry). The Latin word ‘violare’ is itself a combination of these two words and its present participle ‘violans’ is a plausible source for the word ‘violence’, so that the word ‘violence’ in its etymological origin, has the sense of to carry force at or toward” (46).
My advisor believes that this etymology is wrong since she suspects that ‘violence’ comes from vi-o-latus which means, rather, “carry out something THROUGH force”. This would mean that ‘vis’ is the instrument (ablative case) NOT the object (accusative case) of the action.
Would you please help me clarify this problem?

What is the (general) definition of that type of sci-fi called "cyberpunk"?

I'm doing a paper on the recent intro of cyberpunk as a sub-genre to SciFi, why is it so "new", what does it have to say as literature unique to itelf, to sci fi generally? And so forth.

If you were able to time travel, what year would you visit??

Assuming you had access to a time travel machine (OK big assumption) and you could forward or backwards, but only use it one time....What date would you travel back to (or forward to) and why? Some sad books to read?

I love to read some sad stories about a life of an orphan, child abused, family problem, etc. I've read A Child Call It, The Diary of Anne Frank, Torey Hayden's books. Could you recommend me some other books to read? I really need something that can make me cry, some a real tear-jerkers.
Please don't recommend me any love or detective stories from Dan Brown, Danielle Steel, etc. Thanks ...

Why am I on my own?

i have to do alot of things on my own. why?

--i have to choose the right college for me. On my own. I have to "get" the job on my own time. I have to get stuff for myself. When i break up with someone... I'm on my own feeling this way.
