Why would we consider colombian violence to be exceptional compared to the rest of the continent? At what point did this violence scaleted that it became exceptional?

I think it was because it got a lot of publicity, a lot more people know about it than about other shootings.

This is important to us because these violent people want nothing more than to head north to where the money is. Yes, It could happen here. President Fox of Mexico guards his southern border in a very different fashion than the northern boarder shared with the USA.
