I understand the concept that ground is the zero voltage reference point with respect to the rest of the circuit, but with the ground disconnected, will the circuit continue to function?

I was playing a bit with an small circuit, but I found out, even with ground disconnected, the circuit continues to work? Is this really the case or not? What's the reasoning behind this?

I was trying to justify it by thinking that the circuit continues to work because the electrons in the circuit haven't yet accumulated up to the point where the voltage would to equal. But that reasoning sounds pretty dubious because of how fast electrons move.

So what would be the logical explanation for the circuit to continue to function? thanks.

I live in California. My payment for my speeding ticket was due today and I got at the court to pay it at 4:30 p.m. thinking it closes at 5 p.m. I tried to pay it online but it won't let me because I need to live in a certain county. You've got to feel for Laura Norman chasing her share of her estranged husband Greg Norman's fortune. The poor dear is cash strapped and wants "her" money from her husband so she can continue sueing him for her slice of his estate.
The poor thing has had such a hard life, why, the hardest thing she's done in the last 35 years is carry her own handbag from the limo to the penthouse at the 5 star hotels they frequent. Or maybe harder is deciding what to eat at home when one of the many servants enquires "what would Madam desire for the main meal".
OK, so she's entitled to a settlement but I did notice it was him, not her, out there playing in those tournaments for all those years.
