This is known as "god of the gaps." For a long time people believed that earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, lightning, etc. were their fault. That their actions caused god to become angry and cause these devastating natural effects.
We know better than that now. We understand how our environment works and no longer believe that god causes them. However we still don't know how the universe began. Continuing in the tradition of our even more ignorant ancestors we still stuff god into any space we can, any crevice that knowledge doesn't currently fill is left open to the god excuse.
What's wrong with just saying "i don't know 'X,' but I'd really like to find out?"
