After drinking it you believe it is good for you.
If you're addicted to cigarettes, guess you believe that too.

Flavonoids from the skins and seeds of red grapes are the key to wine being good for you. These flavonoids lower your risk of coronary heart disease by reducing your LDL or bad cholesterol levels. At the same time these flavonoids actually increase your HDL or good cholesterol levels and decrease the likelihood of blood clotting.
Scientists believe that there may be other health benefits from red wine. A recent study discovered that an antioxidant in the skins of red grapes, called resveratrol, may inhibit the growth of tumors in some cancers. It’s possible that resveratrol can help treat Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s as well and new studies are on the way.
The key, of course, is limiting yourself to just that one glass!

Red wine (because it contains phenols) does work against coronary heart disease by acting as an antioxidant, which reduces the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and "decreases atherogenicity" as the doctors put it. It also acts as a mild vasodilator, too, causing something of a flush response. You've probably heard of elderly people having a baby aspirin each day? Much the same idea.
On the other hand, however unlikely a single cigarette will hurt you, it certainly won't improve your health in any way.

A glass of red wine a day (actually they say that two is optimal) is very good for your heart.
The same results can be had from drinking some 100% grape juice, but wine is more fun and tastes better.

It has been statistically proven. Men who have two drinks per day (every day, with no binging) have average 2.4 years greater longevity than tee-totallers; women enjoy 1.6 years. The 2 drinks per day drinkers benefit from lower rates of cardiac and circulatory problems and lower incidence of respiratory problems.

I do not think that a drink each day is necessary so I do not do it. As for smoking that is one bad habit I do not have. I am busy working on the ones that I do have.
