Michigan and parts of neighboring states are dominated by Ford and GM and to a lesser extent Chrysler.
These companies have been going downhill for three decades now, almost uninterrupted.
In other words, nobody who presently works for those companies didn't know what they were getting into.
Meanwhile, Toyota has been expanding its US manufacturing base. All of the cars Toyota sells in the US are made here, which is their policy for every country, for business reasons, not political reasons - transportation prices are high and volatile and auto profit margins thin.
So it's not 1 for 1 but it's pretty close.
White collar workers seem to be more willing to move for work - maybe because so many already moved to go to school. We think nothing of it.
Unless you have a parent in a nursing home or something like that, is there any excuse to stay in Flint, MI and complain to the government that "the jobs are gone" when all you have to do to get a new job is move to NC?
