Chicago

I'm in the UK, and want to relocate to America. I've done research (basic) into the areas I would like to live in and Chicago seems to be a really nice place. I have never been there before, so is there anyone who can tell me what areas are nice, and which should I avoid? Also, what are the living costs there? Such as cost of renting an apartment (anything from a studio upwards), how much the average wage could be etc. Also, are the people friendly to British people? I appreciate any help on this!

Literally, we drive in from Madison around 10am and return the rental car to O'Hare at 7pm. I know my boyfriend and I can't see everything in a day... But maybe there are some things to do on a Sunday in Chicago that every traveler should experience just once, so can you recommend anything?

I will be in Chicago on business - my days are full but evenings/nights are free - I will have one or two nights so I am a little short on time. What are the top three things I should do?

Because I want to avoid travelling on the freeways, they are hell. I want to plan better routes using the side roads, but I don't want to be driving throught an area I shouldn't be driving in.

A friend & I are going to Chicago & we've never been there. We love history- the weirder, the better, and we'd like to focus our trip around off-beat places to explore.

It seems there is so much in Chicago regarding its mobster history and so-called "hauntings", that we're not sure which places are the best to visit.

We're cemetary buffs, as well, and if there's anything to do that is strange like touring a deserted prison (not sure if the one I'm thinking of is in Chicago or not..).. well, you get the drift..

Please answer if you know of something we might like to do while in Chicago, and explain a bit about it.

I'm doing searches myself, but I just don't know where to focus yet. Thanks a lot!

atten: Chicago Why are you allowing the closing of two historical stores on state st. Carsons and Marshall Fields. I saw on the news that many people were sad and disappointed that they were leaving state st. If so, then why not do something about it. Chicago will not be the same without them. I sooo loved visiting them whenever in town.
