A friend & I are going to Chicago & we've never been there. We love history- the weirder, the better, and we'd like to focus our trip around off-beat places to explore.

It seems there is so much in Chicago regarding its mobster history and so-called "hauntings", that we're not sure which places are the best to visit.

We're cemetary buffs, as well, and if there's anything to do that is strange like touring a deserted prison (not sure if the one I'm thinking of is in Chicago or not..).. well, you get the drift..

Please answer if you know of something we might like to do while in Chicago, and explain a bit about it.

I'm doing searches myself, but I just don't know where to focus yet. Thanks a lot!

We tend to skip over museums unless there is a specific exhibit of interest, as we've done much traveling and most museums tend to have the "same stuff".

We are looking for something intrinsically "Chicago", rather than the typical musem exhibits one sees everywhere, albiet they are interesting. Thanks.

Check out the Chicago historical society for haunting tours or cemetary tours. I know there is a tour company that specializes in the haunted history. I think it is called Chicago hauntings and it is a 3 hour bus tour.

Coming to Chicago is the exact best place for you. It has everything you descrobed.

I have a couple of "must do" ideas for you.

First ty to book a "Haunted Chicago" Tour through Richard Crowe. It will take you to places like where John Dillinger was gunned down outside the Biograph Theater and the site of the St Valentine's Day Massacre, John Gacy's old home and the site where Richard Speck did his killing spree. All in the comfort of your own air conditioned motor coach -- with Richard Crowe narrating the whole trip.

Plus you should try to check out Bachelor's Grove Cementary -- reputed to be the absolutely most haunted place in Chicago. It is in the south suburbs near Orland Park. You'll need to erent a car to get around but it is really scary.

Search out Richard Crowe's tours and Bachelor's Grove Cemetary on the Internet.

Good question.

You have a great time. Hope this helps.

Alright this is making me crazy, you have to go to ??? cemetery, but I cannot remember the name. It is located at the corner of Clark Street and Irving Park Boulevard, about five minutes from Wrigley Field. The cemetery brags that half of Chicago's streets are buried there.

Famous people buried there include the Palmer family as in the Palmer House hotel, the Field Family as in Marshal Field's Department store, one of the founders of the American League (don't know his name, his tombstone is a baseball), architect Louis Sullivan.

There are many more of course, but my rememberer is not working today.

Would a museum be historical enough for you? :)

T-rex bones, a VERY cool exhibit about Ancient Egypt (unless it was a traveling one, which I don't think so), and lots of other really fascinating exhibits at the Field Museum- my recommendation for an absolute must-see. The neighboring aquarium is pretty cool, too.

The only one I know of is Mt Carmel cemetery is where Al Capone is buried. N If I'm not mistaken in Franking Park there's an auto store that underneath is a tunnel that can be driven all the way to the loop and beyond to trafficked
