I am planning on staying all winter in a town called Ayr in Scotland and dont really want to have to pay the outrageous prices that the local B&B's and other "budget" places charge while i try and find a place to stay.

Does anyone have any tips from previous experiences , perhaps, on ways to find a cheap place to stay before coming to the UK??

I am looking at around 250 pounds per month. and again, I am looking at what is called a "bedsit" or a small room to rent .

thanks for your help!!

We have returned from a week's self-catering holiday in South East Spain, booked through a UK travel company, which was marred by a cooker and washing machine that did not work. For a self catering holiday, this of course is inconvenient to say the least and led us to pay £50 in excess baggage for wet towels that could not be dried on the final day.

The Spanish agency has said we are fabricating the claim as the equipment was working ok and it is our word against theirs.

Our UK travel agency are preferring to believe their Spanish counterparts.

I am planning to write again for the final time to the UK travel company asking for financial compensation for my consideration saying I am surprised they value their reputation so poorly, and plan to raise this with a travel journalist relative of mine, unless I receive a satisfactory response.

What do you think I should do/ do differently?

Thanks SM

Ok, so we are traveling to visit the UK around Christmas this year (from the US). We are renting a car to get around. One of the days I would like to take the Chunnel and use it to go to France and ultimately visit Normandy Beach. Are there any restrictions to my ability to take a rental car into another country? If so, are there addendums you can purchase that would allow this sort of thing?

Thanks in advance for the info. Oh, btw, we plan to use one of the major rental car companies (Avis, Hertz, Alamo, etc) as opposed to something like Fred's Rentals.

I just returned from a trip to the UK, where I had a small fender bender with a UK resident. Rather than go through my car rental insurance, I agreed to pay him 100 pounds (same as the rental insurance deductible). I'm back in the US - how can I most easily get this money to him?

We are going to London the latter part of November - it is near birthdays and Christmas (didn't think about that) - so I need accommodations on a budget. My children are 14 and 15 so alot of places they are considered an adult. Any ideas? I would like to stay around $75/night if possible.

What are the historically most important castle or other similar places in the UK I may visit?
If I can only visit one place, what would that singlemost important place in UK be? It has to be historic.
What are other similar attractions?
Thanks!

I'm sure I read that somewhere - years ago. I have lived in the Cambridge area all my life (30 years) - so my opinion might be biased - but I am not sure what that says about the rest of the country.
