Warwick Castle (2h north of London) is probably the one you don't want to miss (center area remodeled but original structure from XII century I think). Google Warwick castle for details.

The Tower of London (London central) is probably the oldest (XI century), built by William the Conqueror. Interior unfortunately remodeled with the ages and not as old as outside walls.

Edinburgh Castle is gorgeous, around XII or XIII century. And down the street (1 mile away) is Holyroad Castle, very nice as well but much more recent (XVI or XVII century).

Windsor Castle (close to London) where the Royal Family still lives is a definitive winner as well

Blenheim Castle (when Churchill grew up) is very beautiful with gorgeous park (close to Oxford)

In Wales, I would not miss Caernafon Castle (XII century). A ruin mostly but towers are still visitable.

In Dover, the Castle is also very nice and old, and has the priviledge to mix both old age, with the proper castle, and modern times (World War II) with the army fortress in the cliffs.

The Tower of London, an historic fortress built in 1078 by The King William the Conqueror in central London. Here is the home of the Crown Jewels.

Windsor Castle may be 900 years old. Many parts of the Castle are open to the public, this castle is closer to London by train.

There are loads of castles and stately homes in Britain, though many of the castles are ruins.

I would agree with previous answerers about Windsor and the Tower of London. Not only is there plenty to see, but both are important historically in the life of the country.

Two other places that are worth adding to your list are Hampton Court Palace and Blenheim Palace. Hampton Court is within Greater London, so you can get there easily by train from central London or even by boat, which is a great journey but takes four hours. Blenheim Palace is a bus journey from Oxford - which is itself a very historical city.

Hampton Court Palace has great and extensive audio tours of many, many parts of the castle and property which will aid you in learning the historic significance. The Tower of London has fabulous, fun and informative tours. After admission, all the tours are free.

I stay in Virginia and that i individually prefer to circulate to Hawaii. Virginia is eye-catching too with the blue ridge mountains, VA capes, the seashores, rivers and the ecosystem. i ought to never go away to stay someplace else yet i could actually circulate to Hawaii although. it is living house although I dream of being on the coastline in Hawaii
