Travel (General) (Travel) - October 2006

I asked a question previously about traveling on my own- and i gather that this "backpacking" seems really appealing to me. I need some sound advice as to how I should go about doing this. I really would prefer doing it on my own rather than follow a group tour- I hate the idea of being part of a 'flock', though of course this is obviously safer? What do I need?

I am thinking of booking an overseas travel package via internet travel is it safe?

A few years ago I booked and paid over internet through a well publisized company.The day before I was due to leave I had not received my tickets despite numerous phonecalls and assurances they had been posted THEY WERE NEVER DELIVERED! HAd to go into the city to pick them up 12 hours before departure! Whilst I was away one hotel had been booked for the month AFTER I had reutrned so I had to pay the hotel up front despite many promises that the money was forthcoming I had to get Consumer Affairs onto it to recieve the money even though the agent admitted liablity.
