Well, this depends. If you know you are seasick or are prone to be so, then you ought to drive to Folkestone, and follow the signs for the Eurotunnel. However you need to book, so see http://www.eurotunnel.com/ukcP3Main/ukcPassengers/ for more information.
This is the best, there are no risks whatsoever in the tunnel. It is fast (45 minutes max. journey time) and it is reliable. Using the Eurotunnel you could be in Hanover after c. 8 hours. Using a ferry it could take up to 10.
Eurotunnel costs start a £39, but see the website above for more information

London - Folkstone (The Tunnel one way 195 Euros) or London-Dover (P&O Ferries 80 Euros one way ) .You need your ID drivers licence and insurance docs Get yourself a roadmap
(Michelin is good (5 Euros)).Everything is,as said very well signposted.Highways in France will cost you a couple of Bucks.
Other than that ,have fun and enjoy your trip!

One of the best route finders I've used for Euorop is Via Michelin
http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/int/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm
It gives a very good sequential journey plan.
As for passports....take your driving licence and insurance docs.
Some countries have special requirements e.g. I think in France you need a spare bulb kit, in Gernany you need Hi visability jackets for each occupant in case of breakdown ( you can get these at Halfords)
Hope this helps

Unless you are taking a ferry or the chunnel you can’t drive from London to Hanover. There is that little problem of the UK being a Island :D

i often travel from Uk to Hamburg
try this
Dover-Calais with Norfolklines ferries
Then follow the motorways, Calais, Dunkirk, Ostend, Gent, Antwerp, Eindhoven, Venlo, Dusiburg, Hanover
From Calais, in a normal car, and in normal traffic you should manage it in about 61/2-7hours
This route has NO motorway tarif, and is well signposted from town to town
I usually use a route planner, but only because, for me, I go a different route from Duisburg, and it's not so well signposted
Good luck, and gute reise-

If your passport does not limit you to enter the Euro States then you are fine. A passport is enough identification.
