Ok, I've worked out the common sense stuff.....I need to know about the things that aren't so obvious. I already know what I need to get to go, and I have found out everything about the culture that I can (I fell in love with Italy when I was 15) and I speak the language fairly well. I've looked up everything from crime rates to the average temperatures. I just want to make sure I've not left anything out. So any advice would be helpful. Oh, and also, I only plan on living there for about a year before I go to college because I won't have the chance to go after I get out. Oh, and another thing, I'll be traveling there and living there by myself until I make friends there, though I will have a room mate because I will only be able to afford to rent a room in an apartment, not the whole thing :( Thanks!

the idea of studying abroad in italy has been on my mind for the past few years. I'm going to be a junior in high school next year and the ideas that have been putting my travel on hold is
A. is 16 too young? would it be more fulfilling if i wait until freshman year of college to study the language abroad?
and
B. if i stayed with a host family, what would it be like? what if im uncomfortable with them, i dont know what to say to them, its akward or just a bad experience?

I've been reading a lot of posts warning people not to travel to the city in late August (which sucks, 'cause that's when summer school ends for me), but is early September any better in terms of crowdedness, humidity, site closures, etc? My italian's getting a bit rusty... I'm seeing an italian friend's parents for the 2nd time in a few hours. I have forgotton how to address them politely... If my friend's surname is Rossi but his mother's maiden name is Loredana Francoli, what do I call her? Signora Rossi, Signora Francoli, Signora Loredana?? My friend's father I would just call Signore Rossi, right? Thanks.

People say that when it is summer, all the locals are out so that means there will be no places to go and enjoy our stay. This is our first time to travel to Europe. These last 2 weeks of Aug. are the only available weeks we can take a vacation.

I know we cannot categorise personality or culture, but I read from a book that each region has a different mentality in culture in Italy. I am interested in the ones like Abruzzo and Puglia.
