My italian's getting a bit rusty... I'm seeing an italian friend's parents for the 2nd time in a few hours. I have forgotton how to address them politely... If my friend's surname is Rossi but his mother's maiden name is Loredana Francoli, what do I call her? Signora Rossi, Signora Francoli, Signora Loredana?? My friend's father I would just call Signore Rossi, right? Thanks.

Signor Rossi and Signora Rossi.

If you feel friendly, and if it is a good friend, it could be acceptable to call them Signora Loredana, Signor Franco (p. ex)... or they may go ahead and tell you to call them by first name and use the TU form - but they must propose this first.

While it is true that ladies in Italy legally keep their name, by usage they switch to the married name. In particular, as you would meet the parents as a couple, it would be inpolite to hint that they may not be married... :)

Italian women that are married are called Signora ---- married name. Their documents etc are kept in their maiden name but they are not called that.
You should call her Signora Rossi and her husband should be called Signor Rossi. Signore (pronounced with the "e") is what you call a man without adding his name.
It is very important that you show the utmost respect. They will appreciate it immensely.
Just to let you know I am not guessing here and I am not a third generation Italian in the USA.... I have been living here in Italy for eight years. Have a good dinner!

Most Italian women don't change their last names when they get married, so I would use her maiden name. Signora Francoli.

If you're IN Italy at the moment, check their mailbox on your way up to their apartment. Most Italian mailboxes have two last names on them- one for the man and one for the woman.
