last year i met a guy from the united states. he had an exchange to hamburg, germany. we were talking and he told me, that he was wandering that we have cars in germany. he thought we still cook our food on a camp-fire. and many other things. he told me that a lot of his friends think about germany that way.

the most annoying thing was that he thought that everything in germany looks like bavaria.

and another thing i have recognized was that he couldn't seperate between the european countries. he didn' say england, sveden, poland ore even germany, he always said "europe"

why is it that way? was this guy a total dumbass or do you don't learn bout other countrys in school?

This has got to be one of the major problems I have encountered in Germany the past 22 or so years as a foreigner, and I must say I haven't seen it anywhere else. So some SERIOUS answers would be appreciated, and not the riff-raff that occasionally trickles in. My questions may sometimes be pointed, but I assure all they are seriously posed.

If one enters an establishment and there are no barriers or ropes set up to channel traffic to service people waiting on the other side of a counter, Germans will NEVER be able to form a single line in front of each cashier/teller/service person! They mill around in a mass, looking to butt in front of someone, which is both rude and hazardous to one's health where I come from. The worst are the morons who are not in any line at all, but in the MIDDLE of clearly-delineated lines waiting to pop in front of someone..talk about risky behavior. I have NEVER failed to address anyone who cut in front of me, and my "schimpfen" is not easily forgotten.

I was thinking of taking the train (or some other means if you have a better idea) to one of the following towns, having lunch & getting a river cruise back to Cologne on a KD cruise (the roundtrips & special itineraries aren't avail on my dates) Which of the following towns would you suggest we eat in & start the cruise from? (Linz, Remagen, Unkel, Bad Honnef, Konigswinter, Bad Godesberg, Bonn, Wesseling)

This is a purely subjective question. All opinions welcomed, no matter how illicit. Does this economy based on at least these factors, social climate, economy, quality of life and whatever else the respondent feels that need be taken into consideration. To make a long story short, gimme the lowdown.

It's been a while since I've been to Germany. How do you purchase a round way ticket going from Frankfurt to, let's say, Mannheim. It would be second class. Also would I have to buy a ticket for my one year old daughter?

This is a serious question!

We are going through a heat wave here in Germany and it is no fun for anyone, but isn't helped a bit by so many people who insist on riding public transportation and entering public places smelling like SOUR BILLY GOATS! I have never seen -- or smelt -- it so bad here before, even during the record heat waves of 2003.

Do some people have such aversion to showers, deodorant and common decency in public? Last time I checked, Germany was not a Third World country and had sufficient infrastructure to accommodate at least a shower every other day and adequate laundry facilities to wash sour shirts, stinky drawers with "skid marks," etc.

I am not talking about the beggar crack addicts who usually jump on the trams without paying and ride first class to boot. I am referring to people who are well-dressed and obviously have money for soap and deo. Even some WOMEN stank! Is it just me, just Germany, just this summer, or what?

What is the problem???
