What are some good non-touristy sights to see. He's not much of a war history buff. Maybe some famous homes or panoramic vistas. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

My favorite part of Germany is the area around the Rhine river between Mainz to Colgne. There are old castles on the mountains lining the river that you can visit. There are, of course, tours but you can decide how you want to structure things. The views and history are awesome regardless. There are also steep terrace vineyards that are beautiful. If you continue South afterwards to the Black Forest the drive is worth it. We also went to Dachau concentration camp memorial and it was not touristy as I had expected. It was touching and memorable.

As already mentioned, the Rhine region is beautiful with all the castles, vineyards, etc. The Black Forest is another excellent choice. Then there's the Romantic Road, www.romanticroad.com should give you some info.
There's lots to see. Might also consider the islands off the coast in the North Sea, no cars on most of them, definitely worth seeing, depending on how long your friend has time to spend. Enjoy the stay.

- Dresden & its surrounding
- the harz (mountains)
- the eifel (great landscape with sleeping vulcanos) arround the city Monschau
- Grafschaft Bentheim (near the dutch border, great for biking, horse-riding and trips by canoo) with an old mideval castle and nice camping places
- Island Ruegen in the north-east of Germany with long beaches at the east sea with a great landscape

Here's an intersting site. I'm not a big one on Germany so I don't know if these are mainstream or not. I've never heard of most of them..so that must have some value.
