On a saturday or sunday there's a "Schoenes Wochenende Ticket" ("nice weekend ticket") for 35,- EUR which allows travelling by slow trains the whole day in germany for up to 5 passengers. There's a ticket machine on almost every train station. Such a journey will take you about 9 hours, and you might have to change trains often (3 to 6 times).

Taking a faster train (Inter City = IC, approx. 6 hours travel time) will be 70;- EUR, the fastest connection by Inter City Express (= ICE; 5:30 hours) is 81,- EUR. That's regular fares!

Special fares are available for return tickets on fast trains (IC, ICE) only - it saves you up to 50%, but you'll have to buy those tickets at least 3 days in advance and to take exactly the booked trains. Regular tickets are valid for any train on the issued day.

For details look at www.bahn.de and klick on "internat. guests" for the english version.

If you feel comfortable driving, I'd have a look at hire cars. Would be faster (depending on traffic) and could be cheaper...
