i recently lived in brazil for 4 years & it was ridiculous, the majority of men expect that the woman do as she is told & not have her own thoughts & opinions...many men would prefer that their women remain home, cooking, cleaning & caring for children all the day, then catering to the man`s needs when he arrives home from work...it`s a very-male dominated society...sadly, physical abuse toward women in those countries is also high...how is it possible that women will put up with this type of thing??? lol i guess i`m just too independent & outspoken, but i offended many a man in brazil!!! so i say, good for me!!!

This will be the first time I have traveled outside of the US. Any advice of what to expect? What not to do? what places are dangerous? I will be spending some time with a friend there but also sightseeing on my own during the day, is it safe for me to be walking around alone in Rio? I read somewhere that I shouldn't wear jewelry as I might get robbed is this true? Would wearing fashionable, but not too expensive, clothes get me some unwanted attention by thieves, creeps etc. Thanks in advancefor the help!

Whats the difference? I know that culturally they are different, how about machismo? What are their expectations of women, how do they look at women etc? Are they more liberal? I am Puerto Rican and Puerto Rican men are very traditional even though you Do have your liberal PRs. Like in Puerto Rico, a woman would not stay quiet to a guy if he said that he wanted to sleep with her off the bat or insult an older person in front of her(we value and respect "los ancianos"). Or if your at a club with your boyfriend and some other guy tries to talk to her or make a move on her, hes going to get his A$$ fked up..really bad or killed...would it be a big deal in Brasil if that were to occur? Only Brasilians answer por favor...

I've been a few days in Rio de Janeiro, and I've found beautiful beachs and people, but I've also found that the city is very unsafe for a tourist. I've heard lots of warnings about the risks of being robbed, kidnapped or killed. I'm eager to know more brazilian places, but with lower levels of unsafety. I know that there's poverty and unequity in Brazil, which will probably increase the level of violence, but surely there're different levels in different places, and perhaps you could give me some information about this issue. I have checked travel recommendation websites but looking to the Yahoo! community for your first-hand suggestions on nice, clean, possibly swanky hotels nearby to restaurants, cafes, shopping, etc in the Jardins area of Sao Paulo. Or, if you have other suggestions for hotels less than $200 in other safe Sao Paulo neighborhoods with a similar profile, please share those ideas too. I will be travelling there in April.
