ok...to be VERY honest...Rio is messed up if you don't know EXACTLY where you are going...

all I can say is..STAY AWAY FROM THE CITY CALLED..

CIDADE DE DEUS...IT IS AS REAL AS THE FILM DEPICTS..

FAVELAS ARE WORSE THAN HOODS...because hoods....are still neighborhoods with houses that are separated from each other and with all the gangs and BS that are in there....the Favelas are houses on top of houses that cover a hill and have small dirt trails between them..they are still messed up..drugs and guns and everything in between is more than prevalent...are there good people there? yeah..but they have ALL been there long enough to handle their own...

I love the Brazilian people..I have married myself into their culture and family. My own kids are half Brazilian..but there are places to avoid..you wouldn't go into South Central, or Compton LA,SE Washington DC, Watts, Harlem, South SIde Chicago or Oakland(richmond), CA without someone who knows the area...so the same applies to the favelas...

When you travel to smaller cities like Juiz De Fora, Niteroi, Campos, RJ..Vitoria ES, Aracaju, SE, Maceio AL, Porto Alegre, RG, Goiania GO...you will find yourself much happier..as crime is considerably less...

The dangerous areas are only the big cities , the rest your are safe.
I have travelled in many places in Brazil , and I have never had a problem.
However, I have been robbed in France , the UK and Spain

I lived there and I'll tell you.. I explored a lot with my guy friends.. and we never had problems but they're all brasileiras and I'm portugues so I speak the language. If you're english just be careful

DONT go on a favela tour.. unless you are with a portuguese speaker.. or someone you can trust..

what areas do you want to go to ?? just do some reading about it .. and play it safe.. dont walk by yourself.. your flash your digital camera everywhere.. dont walk where its not lit at night .. ect
